The role of history in our modern civilization has been a subject of heated discussion, with some dismissing and perceiving history meaningless and impractical. While I believe that history mostly serves as a means for reference and contemplation, I respectfully disagree with the dismissal of history in modern context and believe that it is of significant importance to humans.
To begin with, many people assert that history offers no practical value to humanities. In other words, they believe that history belongs to the past and has little impact to the status quo. This opinion states that rather than ruminating the past, one can make dramatic changes to their life by shifting the focus on contemporary and future outcomes. For instance, a person can suffer from childhood hardship, but he or she has the ability overcome personal setbacks in the future by taking prompt action. The same can be applied to our society, where the current and future generations take precedence over the elderly. In this case, history is nothing but a reference, seemingly trivial and unimportant to our existence.
However, my viewpoint is different. History can offer values and benefits, but they are more intricate and implicit. This perspective highlights the fact that history is a reflection of past events to current context, and its value for reference can be more meaningful for everyone. By contemplating the past, a person can learn his or her mistake and avoid recurrence of such an action in the future, mitigating potential risks and negative consequences. For example, through bloodshed and war, nation leaders can know the catastrophic results of inciting violence, hence taking action to prevent wars from happening again in the future. This saves the future generations from suffering such devastating consequences like their forefathers used to bear.
Furthermore, history forms an indispensable part of the culture. By delving into the history of a nation, people can have a broadened understandings and knowledge of the country. This not only helps promote national identity, but also encourages patriotism. The future generations can know better about what used to occur in the past, hence taking pride in being parts of the country and having a more empathetic look toward the sacrifice of their ancestors. The result is enhanced social cohesion, as well as unity of different segments of society.
In conclusion, while some people disregard the importance of history as well as hindsight, it is my view that history can help individuals reflect and provide introspection of current circumstances. The benefits can help rectify behaviors and the heightened cultural values are meant for social bonding and a sense of belonging. (436 words)
