SAMPLE WRITING TASK 2 - TOPIC SCIENCE SUBJECTS - DẠNG BÀI CAUSE - EFFECT

Nowadays, not enough students choose science subjects in universities in many countries.

What are the reasons for this problem?

What are the effects on society?

The erosion in popularity of science academics has been more evident in recent years. While the root causes lies in perceived difficulty of the studying syllabus and diminished career prospects compared to social subjects, such a phenomenon is detrimental to society in general.

The declined prevalence of science-based disciplines is attributed to two primary reasons. First, the highly demanding studying environment can be demotivating to many, with students in these majors being required to grasp abstract scientific knowledge and even conduct intensive research and experiment during the rigorous studying time. Hard though the process, the grim reality is that many science graduates are struggling to have a career with a decent income, and some even have to switch to another path bearing no relevance to what they have studied. In contrast, students choosing social subjects may spend less studying time and are reported to have a better salary range upon graduation, making their choice more economically sensible.

The dwindling pool of science students raise concerns for society. Looking back at our history, we are indebted to scientists and inventors whose discoveries, like Tesla’s exemplary research on electricity or Alexander Fleming’s studies on antibiotics, have revolutionized our civilization. As societal progression is heavily dependent on technological breakthroughs and innovation, a loss in motivation for science is inevitably devastating. Furthermore, an shortage of enrolments in schools specialized in science academics can further exacerbate the problem, with some having to close or changing their educational focus to more topical majors. This, eventually, causes serious disruption to not only ones with burning desires for science but also the educational system.

In conclusion, the decreasing students’ interest in science majors rests upon its challenging nature and limited job opportunities for graduates. As science is indispensable for advancement, a loss in students’ motivation seems disruptive for educational establishments and society as a whole. (308 words)
